Developing new plays
Nurturing new artistic voices
Engaging audiences
In addition to our fully produced plays, UP develops new and challenging works of theater, giving artists the chance to workshop new material and audiences the opportunity to be part of the process. All of these programs are free and open to the public.
Summer al fresco Readings
We kick off our new seasons in September with al fresco readings in our local parks. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy some light summer fare (and refreshments after). This season we presented NOIR HAMLET by John Minigan in Isham Park, a witty and zany mashup of Shakespeare and Raymond Chandler.
Showing UP
Throughout the year UP presents open, curated forums in which local artists can try out their works in progress — a scene, a chapter, a song, a stand-up routine, poetry, etc. — in a supportive, community environment. In 2024 we highlighted our young local talent recently graduated from college and returning home to start their careers, calling “Showing UP: Growing UP”. Our most recent iteration, a Halloween-themed “Treats & Tricks", was presented at Buunni Coffee, complete with ghoulishly appropriate delicacies and beverages. This was such a huge success that it is sure to be an annual event.
Look for the next Showing UP in March 2026.
Dead of Winter Reading Series
On four January evenings, UP presents free, exploratory readings of four new plays in various stages of development. These readings always incorporate talk-backs between the audience and playwrights. Many of these plays have gone on to full UP productions.
